On January 22, 2024 (3:00 PM – 4:00 PM, Oslo Time (CET)), Marie Bocquillon, Laëtitia Delbart and Christophe Baco will present a webinar entitled Observation as a tool for training teachers and noticing changes in their practices as part of the QUINT network seminars on observation (University of Oslo).

Abstract

In order to find out about teachers’ actual practices, it is necessary to make observations, as declared practices do not necessarily correspond to actual practices. What’s more, for initial and in-service teacher training, it makes sense to use an observation tool (observation grid), as perceptions can be influenced by various factors, such as the memory of trainers and trainees. This paper presents the use of an observation grid inserted into a software program for teacher training during micro-teaching and internships. The use of this observation tool provides pre-service teachers with feedback on their practice, based on objective data. The coding performed by the trainer is synchronized with the video of the pre-service teacher’s performance. This makes it possible to provide feedback to pre-service teachers, review video extracts with them and contextualize their practices. What’s more, this observation tool was used to analyze the evolution of pre-service teachers’ practices at two points in their internship (by comparing the coding carried out at two points during the internship), as well as to analyze the link between feedback from the supervisor and the cooperating teacher and the evolution of pre-service teachers’ practices. Finally, the paper will also present how this tool can be used to document the evolution of teachers’ practices during several observations following a professional development program.
